[StBernard] Question for Craig

Hi Craig,

My parents are trying to figure out what to do. I know in my heart they
want to come back, but at their age are leary about making that decision.
My dad has started the clean-up process. Their house has been gutted, nail
pulled and he is maintaining the yard. He is trying to figure out just what
permits and reports will be needed to document his progress so that he can
avoid the 3 ft elevation thing.

According to the inspection report done by the parish, he is rated at 30-60%
with a building rating of 1. The 30-60% is probably due to the fact that
his carport collapsed. This collapse has been documented by the contractor
hired to have been caused by wind. Evidently the insurance company agreed
with this as they paid a claim based on the contractor's report. And we
know they never would have paid out if it wasn's justified! Other homes on
his block are listed at 10-30% with no visible damage like his carport.

What exactly will he need to avoid any mitigation issues? He's been to
several meetings and trying to find out, but can't get a definite "to-do"
type list. We realize that the rules that apply to folks trying to rebuild
and return sort of have to change as the folks who are giving you your
guidelines keep changing their minds. With this in mind, can you please let
us know what we need to do?

We appreciate your help. Hammond just isn't home, and I know my parents
would like to get back to Meraux!

On a personal note--Hope you survived getting Megan moved to Florida. Even
though you still have a houseful of little ones (well medium-sized too) it
will feel strange not having her there. My Sam moved to SLU Wednesday, and
came home Friday. Believe it or not, it was harder when she left us Sunday,
than when we left her Wednesday. Tell Debbie and the kids I said hi. I
miss not seeing them at the library and now you have a couple of little ones
that I haven't even been able to get to know thru storytime! If we ever get
a library, we'll have a lot of catching up to do!

Thanks,

Janet
