Governor's Office on Women's Policy and partners to host regional conference at Nicholls State University


BATON ROUGE- Through a special initiative of Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, women leaders from nine parishes will discuss challenges for women created by Hurricane Katrina. Louisiana Women Leaders Bayou regional conference will convene in the Cotillion Ballroom at Nicholls State University on October 6, 2006.

The Bayou Regional Conference will draw women leaders from nine parishes, including: Lafourche, Terrebonne, Assumption, St. Charles, St. James, St. John, St. Mary, Jefferson, and Orleans parishes. The event is sponsored in partnership with the Louisiana Center for Women and Government at the University, the Louisiana Women's Foundation, the Governor's Office on Women's Policy, and the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus. Entergy is the premier corporate sponsor of Louisiana Women's Leaders and regional sponsors include the Lafourche Commission on Women and the Terrebonne Parish Women's Commission. The Bayou region event is the fourth of a series of regional conferences throughout the state. Louisiana's Women Leaders is a special initiative of Governor Blanco.

Previous regional conferences of Louisiana's Women Leaders have been held in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and Shreveport. This is the first regional conference of Louisiana Women Leaders held since hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck the state. The theme of the conference is "Leadership in the Aftermath of the Storms: The Challenge for Women." Workshops and discussions will address topics including aging parents, health, entrepreneurship, empowering women and the insurance crisis.
