[StBernard] St. Charles Parish Adopts Flood Elevation Guidelines; Approval Clears Way for Hazard Mitigation Money

Westley,

the response you gave about the parish not adopting the ABFE affecting flood
insurance is not clear- The situation that exists is that the ABFE issue
does not affect flood insurance for the parish. Flood insurance is based on
the current FIRM (Flood Insurance Rate Map) and the LRA can not change the
FIRM. Anyone who was compliant with the FIRM at the time of the hurricane
is still compliant today. The LRA is attempting to hold out hazard
mitigation money based on the ABFE issue, but we continue to make headway in
creating a way to satisfy the LRA and still protect the parish from an
arbitrary burden to homeowners.

Thanks,
Craig

Whether or not the parish adopts the ABFE does not affect whether or not you
can get LRA money. However, if you are repairing your home, the LRA will
require you to meet the ABFE independently of any parish requirements.

In the short term it is not a problem. In the long term it will affect your
flood insurance.

WHEN WILL ST BERNARD PARISH ADOPT THE FLOOD GUIDELINES?

IF ST BERNARD DOES NOT ADOPT THESE GUIDELINES, DOES THAT MEAN NO ONE IN ST
BERNARD WILL RECEIVE LRA MONEY?
