Postal Service officials said they plan to open a full service trailer
office in 60-90 days in the Poydras area of eastern St. Bernard Parish,
giving the parish a second post office besides the main office in Chalmette
which opened last February.

The trailer office will likely be at the site of the former Gulf Coast Bank
at the intersection of East Judge Perez and Louisiana 46.

Also, the Arabi Post Office will be renovated but no time frame was given
for its reopening.

Parish President Henry "Junior'' Rodriguez and several Parish Council
members praised the announcements which came from postal official Benny
Moschitta at the Nov. 21 Parish Council meeting.

In response to questions from the Council, Moschitta said the current
operating hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chalmette Post Office will be
reviewed for possible extension but he said there are security issues
involved which might prevent that at this time.

He and other postal officials said they can't estimate when or if rural
delivery of mail to a box at the curb of homes will end in favor of
door-to-door delivery on foot because of the checkered nature of hurricane
recovery in the parish.
