St. Bernard Parish Liens Could Hold Up LRA Money

CHALMETTE, La. - St. Bernard Parish is taking owners of blighted homes to
court starting this week, and, according to parish officials, a lien on the
property could be a bigger headache than just the fines. "A lien would have
to be satisfied before there is any buyout by the LRA or by anybody if you
try to sell it," St. Bernard Parish Chief Administrative Officer Dave
Peralta said.

A small window of opportunity remains for the owners of blighted properties
who haven't been taking care of their business. Nearly 500 homes are on a
noncompliance list.

"We're going to take the top 25 who have not complied with the requests,
that's well over 30 days, and this week we are going to file liens at the
courthouse on those residences," Peralta said.

"If your name has been on that list and the property has not been addressed,
this is the absolute last opportunity," Parish Councilman Craig Taffaro
said.

The list of "grass ordinance violations" is available online.
