Bill Would Make Recall Elections Easier
BATON ROUGE, La. -- A state senator has filed a bill for the upcoming
legislative session that would make it easier to petition for a recall
election in Louisiana.
In Louisiana, petitioners can force a recall of a sitting politician if they
gather signatures of at least one-third of eligible voters.
An election would then be scheduled to determine if the official would be
recalled by a majority vote.
Senate Bill 22 by Sen. Walter Boasso of Arabi would require that petitioners
gather signatures of at least one-third of the number of people who voted in
the most recent election for that office.
For example, a recall election of the governor under current law would
require about 900,000 signatures, whereas under Boasso's bill it would
require about half that number.
The bill would apply to statewide and local offices.
