Governor Blanco announces appointments to Board of Regents

BATON ROUGE - Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco today appointed Robert J. Bruno of Covington and Maurice C. Durbin of Denham Springs to the Louisiana Board of Regents.

"Robert Bruno and Maurice Durbin will serve Louisiana well on the Board of Regents," Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco said. "These two leaders bring great energy and a commitment improving higher education across our great state."

Bruno will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Stanley J. Jacobs and will represent the 1st Congressional District. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Louisiana State University (LSU) and his Juris Doctor, Cum Laude from Tulane University School of Law. Bruno practices law in New Orleans and is an active member of the New Orleans Bar Association, the Louisiana Chapter of the Italian American Bar Association, the Louisiana Bar Association, and the Louisiana Association for Justice. He also serves as Chairman of the Louisiana Italian American Sports Hall of Fame as well as on Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District (Superdome) Board of Commissioners and the Tobacco Settlement Financing Corporation Board.

Bruno's term expires December 31, 2008.

Durbin represents the 6th Congressional District. She received a Bachelor of Science in English, a Master of Education, and a Specialist of Education from LSU. She is a governmental relations consultant and a community activist with a focus on issues effecting women and the arts. Durbin currently serves as the chair of the Livingston Parish Animal Shelter Commission and as a board member for the Arts Council of Denham Springs. She is a member of the Humane Society of Louisiana, Sierra Club, ASPCA, and other groups. She is also a former board member of the Greater Denham Springs Chamber of Commerce.

Her term expires December 31, 2012.

The Louisiana Board of Regents is the state's governing body for all public higher education institutions in Louisiana. The Board is currently working on a new master plan for higher education as well as issues to address students' access and success in higher education.
