St. Bernard to restore semi-automated garbage collection
Posted by staff reports May 01, 2007 10:03AM

St. Bernard Parish's garbage hauler rolled out 95-gallon cans today that
will be used to restore semi-automated collection.
SDT Waste and Debris Services, which has the contract to pick up garbage in
St. Bernard, plans to deliver the cans to parish households in the coming
days. The cans will be picked up by a truck using a mechanical arm.
The parish had a similar collection system prior to Hurricane Katrina.

We now have 12,000 homes receiving trash pick-up in St. Bernard Parish and
that speaks volumes for the recovery of the parish and the resiliency of our
citizens, Parish President Henry "Junior" Rodriguez said in a news release.

Sidney Torres IV, president of SDT Waste and Debris Services, said garbage
was collected from only 3,000 homes when the company began its contract
eight months ago. Now, theres 12,000 - thats an impressive and encouraging
sign, he said in the news release.
Rodriguez and St. Bernard Parish Council members inspect one of five new
trucks and some of the 95-gallon cans at the government complex in Chalmette
prior to today Parish Council meeting.

SDT has a 10-year contract for residential waste disposal in St. Bernard
Parish.
