Welcome to the Institute for Legal Reform Email Newsletter!

The Institute for Legal Reform (ILR) is an advocacy group working to end
lawsuit abuse. ILR is a national campaign of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce,
with the critical mission of making America's legal system simpler, faster,
and fairer for everyone.

Where Does Louisiana Rank
in Legal Fairness?

Last week ILR, in conjunction with renowned research firm Harris
Interactive, released its sixth annual state legal fairness ranking study
<http://listmanager.sendreceivenow.com/t/88706/33968227/730/0/> . The study
examines the court systems in each state to determine which are the most
fair and balanced and which are broken and in need of change. Click here to

"This study shows how a handful of jackpot jurisdictions can drag down the
reputation of the entire state, even in those states that have enacted
meaningful legal reform measures," said Tom Donohue, president and CEO of
the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "Similarly, a handful of states with bad
lawsuit systems can affect the United States business climate, hurting our
global competitiveness."

Why Does it Matter if Louisiana's courts are viewed as fair?

<http://listmanager.sendreceivenow.com/t/88706/33968227/733/0/> Companies
are hesitant to do business in a state with a reputation for lawsuit abuse.
Lost business means fewer jobs and stagnant wages. Doctors quit providing
medical care or leave the state because they can't afford insurance. And
lawsuits cost every American $880 a year -- that's more than $3500 for a
family of four in Louisiana!

An unfair legal system sucks the life out of a state's economy. It affects
business expansion, it affects jobs and it takes money out of consumers'
pockets. And that's important to Louisiana!
