The Greater New Orleans Foundation will donate $500,000 each to St. Bernard
and Plaquemines parishes to create affiliate foundations.

The GNOF, a non-profit public charity serving donors in a 13-parish region
of southeast Louisiana, made the announcement Thursday morning. The
affiliate foundations created in St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes will
help serve those respective parishes, the GNOF said in a news release.

"The significance of our investment in these new community foundations is
vital to our mission of fostering regional philanthropy in two parishes that
were devastated by Katrina,'' Dr. Myron Moorehead, chairman of the Board of
Trustees for the GNOF, said in the news release.

The GNOF will "seed'' the St. Bernard Community Foundation and Plaquemines
Community Foundation with $500,000 each over a five-year period. Ten percent
of the money will be set aside as an endowment in each parish.

The mission of the affiliate foundations is to improve the quality of life
for all citizens of the respective parishes, the GNOF news release said. The
board of each organization will identify current and emerging needs and
address those needs through grants. The groups also will foster
relationships with donors to build permanent endowments.
