The St. Bernard Parish Sheriffs Office is expected to reopen its sub-station
on Paris Road next week, the Sheriffs Office said.

It will be the first of four sub-stations the Sheriffs Office plans to
reopen. In addition to Paris Road, two other sub-stations will be opened
near the Orleans Parish line - one on West Judge Perez Drive and the other
on St. Claude Avenue, the Sheriffs Office said in a news release.

Sheriff Jack Stephens said in the news release that his office, as it did
prior to Hurricane Katrina, wants the sub-stations because they help spread
law enforcement personnel across the parish and provide greater police
visability at the three main entrances to the parish -- Paris Road, West
Judge Perez and St. Claude.

A fourth sub-station, in Verret in eastern St. Bernard Parish, will also be
reopened at a later date, the news release said.

Col. Richard Baumy said furniture will be moved into the Paris Road
sub-station Thursday and Friday, with an anticipated opening of Monday or
Tuesday of next week.

The Sheriffs Office was able to salvage the shell of its existing Paris Road
sub-station after Katrinas massive flooding, but did an extensive
refurbishing of the interior, Baumy said. The departments personnel office,
as well as the special investigations unit, will also be housed at the Paris
Road sub-station.

The Sheriffs Office recently bought a building at 1601 Aycock St., at the
corner of West Judge Perez Drive in Arabi, for a sub-station. It will
replace the sub-station farther west on West Judge Perez that flooded during
Katrina.

Meanwhile, the Sheriffs Office is negotiating with the Federal Emergency
Management Agency over the fate of the building that housed the St. Claude
Avenue sub-station prior to Katrina. That building might have to be
demolished and the Sheriffs Office is seeking property for a temporary site
nearby.
