An unknown amount of a diesel-gasoline mixture leaked into the Mississippi
River this morning from a cooling tank at the Murphy Oil refinery in Meraux,
the Coast Guard said.

The substance leaked from the malfunctioning tank into a retention pond that
overflows into a creek, which empties into the river, Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr.
Cheri Ben-Iesau said.

Murphy Oil officials noticed a sheen on the river at 6:15 a.m. and notified
the Coast Guard to help investigate and contain the spill, she said.

She said the substance dissipated in the river and is not deemed a
significant environmental or health hazard.

Clean-up efforts focused on the retention pond, where a vacuum truck was
being used to skim the unfinished diesel-gas blend from the water's surface,
Ben-Iesau said.
