Jill,

Again, I did not want to pin this on Lena, who represents the end of the
line for the Torres family in St. Bernard, but on politicians in general.
But, you miss the point a bit of civic organization participation.

"I personally have seen her over the years at many professional award
ceremonies, banquets, graduations, meetings etc."

Ok, great. She sat thru some boring award ceremonies, long graduations,
etc. The question is, was she there for the real meat and potatoes
functions? Every year the Kiwanis Club would help deliver meals on
Thanksgiving and Christmas mornings. Was she there? Did she help cook
pancakes for the annual pancake breakfast? Did she ever serve on the Board
of Directors and help lead the club in bettering the parish?

My point is, anyone can write a check and say they are a member, that is all
fine and dandy. But are they actively participating?

I personally belong to three organizations (and I'm not talking about school
PTA's) because that is all the time I have to commit. There are probably
another four or five clubs I would like to join, but since I don't have the
time to commit to them, I don't bother. It is not fair to the club or
myself to be a "pretend" member.

Mrs. Lena runs a very tight ship.
She doesn't tolerate socializing and personal conversations that most of us
are guilty of when we meet and greet people we know.
Her management style has always been this way especially considering the
extreme importance of the records and documenation that flows through her
area of responsibility.
She requires specific break times and lunch schedules for her staff. She's a
tough boss to work for but she is also a very compasionate one.
Because of this sometimes the staffing employees do seem to lack some people
skills. Some might have a difficult time separating being nice in a
professional manner from socializing with the public that they are waiting
on them.

And as far as her participation in numerous organizations, I personally have
seen her over the years at many professional award ceremonies, banquets,
graduations, meetings etc. at night on her own time not the taxpayers time.
She has supported every organization in the parish for years with dignity
and grace.
