Dear Friend,

This Monday, August 27th, I am proud to be hosting the "Hope & Recovery
Summit" at the University of New Orleans to discuss the status of
Louisiana's recovery as we near the second anniversary of the devastation
caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The all-day event will be centered on five panel discussions that will
examine different aspects of the recovery, and I would be honored if you
would join us for this important event. I will be delivering opening remarks
at 8:50 am, which will be followed by these panel discussions throughout the
day:

* 9:00 am -- Coastal Restoration, Levees, and Infrastructure

* 11:00 am -- Education Reform and Rebuilding

* 1:30 pm -- Louisiana Business Recovery and Revitalization

* 2:45 pm -- Rebuilding the Criminal Justice System

* 4:00 pm -- Housing Recovery and Sustainable Community Development

Each panel will be comprised of local and national leaders who will discuss
ideas for moving our region's recovery forward. Please click here for a full
listing of the individuals who will take part in these important panel
discussions <http://action.marylandrieu.com/page/m/qoxBUhKByyx/8xxTSq> .

As part of the Summit, we invited all of the Democratic and Republican
presidential candidates to participate. I am happy to announce that four
candidates -- Sen. Hillary Clinton, former Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Sen.
John Edwards, and Cong. Duncan Hunter -- have so far agreed to join us at
the Summit. They will speak after the panel discussions and will deliver
remarks and answer questions on recovery policies and on issues related to
future protection against natural disasters.

The Summit will be held in the Lindy C. Boggs International Conference
Center Auditorium at the University of New Orleans, which is located at 2045
Lakeshore Drive (click here to see the location on Google Maps
<http://action.marylandrieu.com/page/m/qoxBUhKByyx/Kb1FzL> ).

It is hard to believe that it's been almost two years since the devastation
that was visited upon our state by these two fierce hurricanes. I look
forward to this worthwhile exchange of ideas that should reinvigorate our
recovery efforts.

It is my belief that the best tribute to the people of our state who lost so
much in these massive natural disasters is a serious, nonpartisan airing of
the issues that remain to be resolved. That, together with concerted action
as we move forward, is the kind of direction our state needs as we look with
hope to the future.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Mary Landrieu
U.S. Senator
