EDITORIAL: Louisiana must continue to provide incentives for education
Gov. Kathleen Blanco and the Legislature deserve credit for putting money this year into truly long-term investments: endowed chairs and professorships. The state will provide $15.9 million in matching funds to public and private colleges and universities across the state. Part of the money comes from the higher-education trust fund created by the Legislature in 1986 from an oil and gas windfall. But the trust fund can't keep up with the need for state matching funds, and the Blanco administration and the 2007 Legislature added more than $10 million in supplements to match endowments.

Governor Blanco Announces Award to Fight Childhood Obesity
Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco announced today that Louisiana has been selected as one of only 15 states to receive a national grant to be used for childhood obesity prevention efforts in schools. The state is being awarded $110,000 as part of the National Governor's Association's Healthy Kids, Healthy America award to go toward improving obesity rates among the state's youth.

EDITORIAL: Federal water bill critical to st! ate
The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly has approved the Wate r Resources and Development Act. That is good news for Louisiana. The vote count, 81-12, is also good news. It means that there is enough support to override a threatened veto by President Bush. The House of Representatives also approved the measure by a margin that should make it veto-proof.

Governor Blanco urges support of SCHIP expansion
With a Congressional vote expected today, Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco called for support of bipartisan Congressional efforts to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). SCHIP provides health care coverage to millions of low-income children across the country. Congressional leaders are rewriting a bill to renew the program, as a September 30 deadline approaches. President Bush had threatened to veto an earlier form of the bill.

Governor Blanco asks President Bush to sign WRDA
Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco tonight urged President Bush to sign the Water Resources Development Act of 2007 (WRDA) into law, after the US Senate voted today 81-12 to approve the bill. WRDA now heads to the White House for approval. President Bush has threatened to veto the bill.

Governor Blanco marks Hurricane Rita anniversary, focusing on training Louisiana's workforce to meet recovery needs
Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco today joined members of the Louisiana Recovery Authority and the Louisiana Workforce Commission to mark the second anniversary of Hurricane Rita by launching programs in Calcasieu and Iberia Parishes aimed at boosting hurricane recovery by training Louisiana's workforce.
