Boasso picks up endorsement from Shreveport mayor

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover announced Wednesday that
he is backing Democrat Walter Boasso in the governor's race, continuing the
split among Louisiana's black political leaders over candidates.

Boasso, a state senator from St. Bernard Parish, is one of four major
candidates in the Oct. 20 governor's race.

"Coming from humble beginnings he has shown time and again that he
understands the needs of the people of our state and he has shown that he
has the strength and vision to bring us together as a state to solve these
challenges," Glover said in a statement released by the Boasso campaign.

With Republican Bobby Jindal ahead in the polls, the three other major
candidates are battling over support from black voters, who make up 29
percent of registered voters in Louisiana and who have historically voted
overwhelmingly for Democrats.

Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell, a Democrat from northwest
Louisiana, has received endorsements from state Sens. Cleo Fields, D-Baton
Rouge, and Charles "C.D." Jones, D-Monroe, and former Sen. Don Cravins Sr.,
now the mayor of Opelousas.

Boasso has picked up the backing of Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo and on Wednesday
also announced the endorsements of the Rev. Samuel C. Tolbert of Lake
Charles, president of the Louisiana Home and Foreign Mission Baptist State
Convention, and the Rev. A.G. Sudds of Shreveport, president of the Baptist
Missionary and Educational State Convention.

Meanwhile, New Orleans area businessman John Georges, an independent,
announced endorsements from several Baptist leaders from around New Orleans.

"John Georges has the best vision for the entire state of Louisiana and he
is the one needed right now," the Rev. C.S. Gordon Jr., moderator of the
Baptist Pastor Conference of the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan Area and
Vicinity, said in a statement.
