Governor Blanco celebrates Louisiana's Laptop Initiative, delivers on promise to provide laptops to students in Louisiana public schools
Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco visited students at Maplewood Middle School in Sulphur today, one of 54 schools participating in Louisiana's Laptop Initiative, Turn on To Learning (TOTL). Louisiana dedicated $5 million for TOTL, investing in the technology - hardware and software - to support this unique research and development pilot. At Maplewood, TOTL provides 50 students and four teachers with nearly $70,000 worth of technology to support two digital learning classrooms, where students use their laptops in core subjects for a minimum of four hours each school day.

Louisiana Mill Shifts Focus and Remains Open
Louisiana Economic Development (LED) and International Paper (IP) announced today that the Louisiana Mill located in Bastrop, La. would remain open and become a producer of pulp. IP management had been exploring strategic alternatives for the Louisiana Mill, including possible closure, as part of its transformation plan, announced in 2005. With this commitment to plant reinvestment, IP's Louisiana Mill will remain in production and continue to produce product and compete in the global market place.

Governor Blanco Names Bennett Soulier Labor Department Secretary
Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco today named Bennett J. Soulier as secretary of the Louisiana Department of Labor, to serve as the head of the agency for the remainder of her administration. The appointment comes as the current secretary, John Warner Smith, accepts a position as chief executive officer of Next Horizon.
