Girl Scouts aim to make cookies a hit

Girl Scouting is famous for helping girls develop qualities of leadership,
strong values and community service. But it's also earned a reputation for
selling those irresistible Girl Scout cookies.

Beginning Jan. 12, Girl Scouts across southeast Louisiana will start taking
orders for the delectable treats, and St. Bernard Parish's six Girl Scout
troops will get in on the act.

This year's theme is "Make It a Hit."

Two new offerings this year are a sugar-free chocolate chip cookie and a
lemon chalet creme, which is a vanilla sandwich cookie with a hint of
cinnamon-ginger spice and a zesty lemon cream.

Cookies are $3.50 per box upon delivery, and are preservative-free, kosher,
with zero trans fat per serving.

Deliveries start in late February.

Last year nine girls in St. Bernard Parish sold 377 cases, which amounts to
4,524 boxes, said Tanya Palazzalo, St. Bernard's service unit manager.

This year there are currently about 60 girls who are active members of Girl
Scouts in St. Bernard, Palazzalo said. Active troops are: Daisy Troop 128,
Brownie Troop 158, Brownie Troop 272, Junior Troops 278 and 1058 and Cadet
Troop 519.

Girl Scout program age levels are Daisy Girl Scouts, kindergarten; Brownie
Girl Scouts, first through third grades; Junior Girl Scouts, fourth through
sixth grades; Cadette Girl Scouts, sixth through ninth grades; and Senior
Girl Scouts, ninth through 12th grades.

Palazzalo said they all are actively recruiting new members. The annual
membership fee is $10 for girls and adults.

Troops meet at the Community Center of St. Bernard, 1107 Lebeau St., Arabi,
every other Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Prospective members are welcome.

To place an order for cookies, or for membership information, call Palazzalo
