Landrieu Announces $5.25M for St. Bernard Parish
Funds will help prevent future flooding.

WASHINGTON - United States Senator Mary Landrieu, D-La., today announced
that St. Bernard Parish will receive $5,250,000 in federal funds to purchase
61 residential properties that experienced devastating wind and flood damage
during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. The parish is planning to
convert these properties in the Village Square subdivision in Chalmette, La
into a contiguous stretch of green space.

"In Louisiana, we have seen firsthand the incredible damage that may be
caused by severe flooding," Sen. Landrieu said "Not only does excessive
water cause extensive structural damage to our homes, schools and
businesses, but the mold that persists after the flood waters recede poses a
significant health hazard.

"Just as we go to great lengths to ensure our infrastructure can withstand
extreme flooding and work to prevent entire cities from ending up under
water, we must also make a commitment to smart community planning."

Homeowners are voluntarily participating in this program. The removal of
these structures from the floodplain is expected to reduce safety and health
risks to homeowners while also bringing cost savings to the National Flood
Insurance Program by reducing flood insurance claims.

The total cost of the three-year project is $7,000,000.
