Home rebuilding increases in N.O., St. Bernard

A recent study shows rebuilding is on the rise in the metro area.
In May, the University of New Orleans Geography Department conducted a
survey of 2,435 homes in New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish that flooded in
Hurricane Katrina. Of that number, 62 percent were being renovated or
rebuilt or had been completed. 
When the same homes were surveyed in early 2007, only 35 percent were under
repair, said Peter Yaukey, UNO associate professor of geography.
Twenty-seven percent of the homes have only been gutted, compared with 57
percent in that condition in the 2007 survey, Yaukey said.
