A married couple in Chalmette left an infant and 4-year-old child home
sleeping while they allegedly broke into a neighbor's home, a spokesman for
the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office said.

Jason Cain, 28, and his wife Christy Cain, 29, both of 514 Chalmette Ave.,
were arrested Thursday just after midnight after they were seen running from
a residence in the 200 block of Chalmette Avenue, a spokesman for Sheriff
Jack Stephens said.

Sheriff's deputies responding to a report of suspicious activity stopped the
pair. Christy Crain told the deputies she was running home because they had
left their 4-month-old child and 4-year-old child unattended at home, the
sheriff's office said.

But the woman admitted to deputies that the couple broke into a home by
standing on a car in a driveway and forcing open a side window. A backpack
containing tools and other items allegedly taken from the home was located
behind the car they used to gain entry, deputies said.

Deputies found the two children sleeping in separate bedrooms in the
otherwise deserted home, the sheriff's office said.

Christy Cain was booked with simple burglary, child desertion, criminal
trespassing and, in an unrelated matter, obtaining prescription drugs under
false pretenses. She is being held on $75,000 bond. Jason Cain, held on
$25,000 bond, was booked with child desertion, criminal trespassing and
unauthorized entry of a dwelling.
