St. Bernard releases early storm plans

06:12 PM CDT on Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Dominic Massa / Eyewitness News

Like their counterparts in most other south Louisiana parishes, officials in
St. Bernard said they are closely monitoring Gustav, and encouraging
residents to make preparations for the storm.

Parish President Craig Taffaro said people who have special physical or
medical needs should register for the parish's evacuation assistance by
calling 504-278-1593 before Thursday at midnight.

Residents who cannot evacuate on their own and need transportation to a
state-run shelter also can call that number or show up at one of the
designated pickup points along the St. Bernard Urban Rapid Transit
Evacuation Route.

Once an evacuation is called, a bus will stop at the pickup points once
every 30 minutes, to bring residents to the staging areas where they will
then be registered and placed on state buses to be taken to a shelter.

The pickup points are:

Celebration Church, 7500 W. Judge Perez Drive in Arabi

Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church, 2320 Paris Road in Chalmette.

Chalmette High School, 1100 E. Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette.

Corinne Missionary Baptist Church, 5620 E. Judge Perez Drive in Violet

Beauregard Middle School, 1201 Bayou Road in St. Bernard

Fanz Mobile Home Park, 2100 West Fanz in St. Bernard

Parish officials say residents should bring any prescription medications
with them, along with any personal papers or identification. Passengers
will be allowed only one small carry-on bag. Pets must be transported in
carriers, in order to be evacuated.
