Chalmette Tournament aids Assumption volleyball team
William Dunn, The Times-Picayune, September 22, 2008 12:14 p.m.
The Chalmette Owls were heavily involved in hurricane relief last week, and
this time they provided it.
Chalmette volleyball coach Kelli Plaiscia organized a tournament at
Chalmette as a fundraiser for the volleyball team at Assumption High School.
Plaiscia's team had participated in Assumption's annual tournament for the
past 12 years. When she learned the tournament was canceled due to Hurricane
Gustav, she was eager to help.
"They held their tournament every year and it was a major fundraiser for
their program," Plaiscia said. "So we held a tournament of our own and all
proceeds from ticket sales went to their team. We figured that so many
people came out to help us when we were recovering from Katrina that it was
only right for us to help them out with this."
The Owls advanced past pool play to meet Curtis, E.D. White and Mount
Carmel in the tournament. Chalmette defeated Mount Carmel before losing to
E.D. White to finish second in the tournament.
"I'm really proud of the way our girls played in the tournament,"
Plaiscia said. "They came out ready for every game and they fought really
hard."
