Chalmette block closed as man threatens suicide

Authorities have shut down a block of Chalona Drive in Chalmette as they
negotiate with a man threatening suicide inside his house, the St. Bernard
Parish Sheriff's Office said. 

The man has at least two knives but is not believed to have a gun and does
not have a hostage, Sheriff's Office spokesman Steve Cannizaro said.
Authorities said the man had taped knives to both of his hands.

Negotiators have been standing on the porch, talking with the man through
the closed front door, said Cannizaro.

Cannizaro did not know what led to the standoff, which began about noon in
the 2600 block of Chalona Drive, the first block north of Judge Perez Drive.
