The 194th Anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans is celebrated

 

More than 130 living history volunteers portrayed the military camp
lifestyle as well as held military, artillery and musket demonstrations from
the critical battle fought in Chalmette on Jan. 8, 1814. The National Park
Service event at the Chalmette Battlefield drew visitors Thursday, Friday
and Saturday to the battlefield. 

 

On Friday evening, the St. Bernard Parish Government worked with the Los
Islenos Heritage and Cultural Society to hold a separate event to portray a
reenactment of the Dec. 23, 1814 night time skirmish at the De La Ronde
Oaks. In that skirmish, the American actions prevented the British from
marching on New Orleans and capturing the city immediately. It gave Gen.
Andrew Jackson time to better prepare for the main battle which occurred
Jan. 8 , 1815.

 

About 500 to 700 visitors attended the Friday night re-enactment at the De
La Ronde Ruins and Oaks. The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office and School
Board also assisted with this event. Fifteen students from the Chalmette
High School Ambassadors with a  grant from the Isleno Society, wore
traditional Canary Islands clothing, gave tours, helped direct the public at
the event and performed skits of Canary Islanders who fought and lived
through the Battle of New Orleans.
