12:49 PM CST on Friday, February 20, 2009

VIOLET, La. - A 15-year-old boy who police believe shot himself in the head
after an altercation with his 13-year-old stepsister during which she was
shot in the face, has died, according to St. Bernard Sheriff's Office
spokesman Steve Canizzaro.

The young man, whose name has not been released, had been hospitalized since
the incident Sunday afternoon.

Detectives said their initial investigation led them to believe the
15-year-old boy shot his 13-year-old step-sister in the face on Sunday in
the 2300 block of Edgar Drive.

The 13-year-old girl managed to call 911. Deputies arrived a few minutes
later at the home in the 2300 block of Edgar Drive.

"Shortly afterwards, the deputies heard a shot inside the gutted home," said
Chief Deputy Jimmy Pohlmann, with the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office.

Inside lay the 15-year-old, with what investigators believed was a
self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Deputies at the scene found a
semi-automatic gun.
