[StBernard] Obama: Let Them Eat Pork

     Congress approved another $410 billion in ADDITIONAL spending. - that's
about $1,400 for every man, woman and child in the United States or about
$7,000 for the average family of four. 

     That's on top of the $180 billion bailout passed last spring, the $345
billion bailout in the summer, the $700 billion bailout in the fall and the
recent $780 billion bailout. 

     And that's not all. Not only does the $410 billion in additional
spending include a mind-boggling 8,500 earmarks that have a price tag of
about $7.7 billion, but 40 percent of the $7.7 billion in Congressional pork
is coming from REPUBLICANS! 

     The worst part is that this Congressional pork should have never passed
the Senate or the House of Representatives in the first place. 

     The sad truth of the matter is that our elected officials - on both
sides of the aisle - are so in love with their wasteful pork that - even in
these trying economic times - they simply REFUSE to give it up. 

     Here's the blow-by-blow: 

     After passing this monumental tribute to pork, Speaker of the House
Nancy Pelosi threw down the gauntlet and DARED the Senate to change it,
saying that she would SCRAP the pork-laden omnibus bill if the Senate made
ANY changes to it. 

     At that point, Senate Republicans - with the help of Democrats such as
Senators Evan Bayh and Russ Feingold - could have simply said "no" and
forced the passage of a stop-gap spending measure that would have funded the
government at current levels - NO PORK! 

     But alas, that's not what happened. 

     Instead, Republicans - in what has shamefully become typical fashion -
struck a "deal" with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and agreed to allow
this tribute to pork to come to a vote - knowing it would pass - in exchange
for floor time to propose amendments that were unlikely to pass! 

     Here's what FOX News said: 

"After some intense wrangling, the Senate is poised to pass a controversial
$410 billion spending bill Tuesday that funds the government though the end
of the fiscal year. The bill includes an 8.5 percent across-the-board
increase over last year and billions of dollars worth of pet projects. 

"Final passage was temporarily delayed because of disagreements... This
deprived Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., of the 60 votes he needs
to shut off debate and move to a final vote. 

"Twelve Republican amendments will now be considered between Monday and
Tuesday with Democrats working hard to defeat all of them to meet a demand
by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, that the bill not change. Pelosi has
said any alteration in the House-passed omnibus would likely lead to a
scrapping of the measure in favor of a continuing resolution - a stop-gap
measure that would fund the government at current spending levels through
September." 

     In other words, Republicans in the Senate, instead of allowing this
tribute to pork to simply die an unceremonious death, essentially said: 

"Come on Harry... 40 percent of this pork belongs to us... too many of our
Members like it so it's going to pass... at least give us a little floor
time to pontificate and throw a little red-meat to the folks back home...
whaddya say!" 

     What more needs to be said? That's not leadership. That's not what the
American people, especially in these trying economic times, want. It is
INSANITY and this insanity must stop!

Just Who Are The Porkers? 


     According to the Associated Press, House Minority Leader John Boehner
called on President Obama to keep his campaign promise to end earmarks and
VETO this tribute to pork. 

"Boehner said he hoped Obama would veto the bill. He urged the president to
work with House Republicans to impose a spending freeze until the end of
this fiscal year." 

     To Boehner's credit, he has placed NO earmarks whatsoever into the
bill... but why stop at admonishing Obama? And moreover, why would Obama
even consider working with House Republicans to freeze spending when the
overwhelming majority of House Republicans are feeding at the trough? 

     Would it have not been a real sign of desperately needed leadership if
Boehner demanded that his fellow Republicans relinquish the pork that they
placed into the bill and immediately save the taxpayers approximately $3
billion? 

     And which Republicans are feeding at the trough? 

     According to Taxpayers for Common Sense, a watchdog group:
 
 Congressman Ron Paul leads the pack among House Republicans and has 20
earmarks (just short of $74 million) in the bill.

  Congressman Don Young from Alaska has 27 earmarks (over $71 million) in
the bill. 

  On the Senate side, Thad Cochran has 204 earmarks, for a grand total of
$470 million, in the bill. 

  Roger Wicker comes in at $390 million, David Vitter comes in at $249
million and Kit Bond comes in at over 248 million.	 

     In fact, only a very small minority of Republicans in the House and
only three Republican Senators (John McCain, Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn) have
NO earmarks whatsoever in the bill. 

     There's an old expression; people who live in glass houses should not
throw stones. While it is admirable that a handful of Republicans are
admonishing President Obama to practice fiscal restraint, one would have to
be deluded to believe that such a thing could ever happen as long as
REPUBLICANS ARE FEEDING AT THE TROUGH TOO! 

     It's time to let our leaders in Congress know that the American people
are wise to their hypocrisy and that it will NO LONGER BE TOLERATED! It's
time to tell conservative legislators that they must start leading by
example.

Is It Time For A Tea Party? 


     Joseph Farah with WorldNetDaily.com made the following observation: 

"The patient is in critical condition and chief physician Barack Obama and
his medical team are prescribing and administering potentially lethal doses
of the very drug (more debt) that sent her to the emergency room." 

"Tea parties around the nation are a great start. But they may not be
enough. Most of them are being ignored by my negligent colleagues in the Big
Media. So, I am convinced something larger must be organized – right inside
the belly of the beast, in the heart of darkness, in Washington, D.C., the
District of Criminals." 

     Farah has a valid point. Our elected officials are operating under the
erroneous assumption that a tea party gives people the opportunity to
relieve their angst and anger... get things off their chests... and that
once the tea party is over; they can go back to business as usual. 

     Tea parties are not enough! We need to hit our elected officials
CONSTANTLY... right where they live and work... IN WASHINGTON. 

     We have our own solution! We hit our elected officials constantly and
we flood their offices - where they work - with calls and faxes. 

     Make no mistake, as a conservative activist, you are part of a very
potent grassroots lobbying force in Washington. 

     Because of your efforts and the efforts of people like you;
 
  Amnesty for 12-20 million illegal aliens IS NOT the law of the land.

  We have thus far stopped a full court press by liberals to enact the
so-called Fairness Doctrine and silence conservative talk radio.

  President Bush commuted the sentences of the wrongfully prosecuted
former-border agents Jose Compean and Ignacio Ramos.	 

      Those are just a few of the battles you have won. Make no mistake,
without your commitment and your action, the world would be a very different
place today! 

     You don't need tea parties to take this country back. You don't need to
spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars to travel to a far-away city and
march in freezing weather. 

     As a conservative activist, you have the opportunity each and every
week to make your voice heard loud and clear and in a very profound way!

Sometimes, It's Like Scolding A Child. 


     If you are a parent or work with children, you know the score. 

     You catch a child doing something wrong and you correct the child. 

     Some children heed immediately. 

     Some straighten out their act for a while but then start to
incrementally move back toward incorrect behavior and test your resolve each
and every step of the way. 

     And some simply take precautions not to be caught and go on doing the
very thing you admonished them for doing in the first place. 

     More often than not, Members of Congress exhibit the latter behavior. 

     They pontificate against out-of-control spending and then - when they
think you aren't looking - feed at the pig-trough. 

     There's only ONE solution when it comes to putting a stop to such
behavior... PERSISTENCE! 

     Admonish them. When you catch them going behind your back, admonish
them again. As long as you stick to your guns, they eventually get the
message. 

     Let's send our elected leaders that message. Let's be persistent!
