St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office holding news conference to discuss
unsolved 2008 murder

St. Bernard Parish law enforcement authorities will hold a news conference
Friday to publicize an unsolved murder from last year

Peter Ruiz, 83, was found dead in the back yard of his Sable Street home in
Arabi on Jan. 13, 2008. Authorities said it appeared he was killed by a blow
to the head.

Ruiz, a former security guard and cabdriver, had been reported missing by
his family earlier that day. Ruiz had just moved back into his renovated
house, which was flooded during Hurricane Katrina.

Neighbors said Ruiz tended a small vegetable garden in his back yard, where
he grew tomatoes, okra and bell pepper.

Authorities hope Friday's news conference, which starts at 10 a.m. at the
Sheriff's Office in Chalmette, will spark new leads in their investigation.
