CHALMETTE, La. -- Hundreds of concerned citizens packed the St. Bernard
Parish Council chambers Tuesday to oppose the idea of building four
mixed-income apartment complexes.

The St. Bernard Parish Planning Committee voted 7-0 to deny the request by
development company, Provident Realty, to build the four mixed-income
apartment complexes in the parish.

One concerned person told the parish Planning Commission that if it allows
developers to build these projects, it will be the "death of St. Bernard
Parish."

Developers want to build four separate 72-unit developments in the parish.

After Hurricane Katrina, the parish council passed an ordinance banning the
development of apartment complexes with more than five units. A judge said
that was illegal.

Now developers want to build more than 250 units. The Planning Commission is
expected to decide Tuesday if it will allow the apartment complexes to be
built.
