Man charged with theft of government funds

Associated Press - June 25, 2009 5:54 AM ET

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Louisiana man has been charged with fraudulently
obtaining a Hurricane Katrina homeowner grant.

Federal prosecutors say 50-year-old Charles David Thonn, of Chalmette,
secured an $80,368 grant from Louisiana's Road Home program for a New
Orleans property that wasn't his primary residence when the August 2005
storm hit.

Thonn was charged Tuesday with one count of theft of government funds. The
charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
