Community Center Seeking Volunteers to Receive the President’s
Volunteer Service Award

The Community Center of St Bernard, 1107 LeBeau St, Arabi, LA is
looking for volunteers who qualify for the President's Volunteer
Service Award, a national program recognizing Americans who have
demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service. Established
in 2003, the Award gives Presidential recognition to individuals,
families and groups who meet requirements for volunteer service, as
measured by the number of service hours performed over 12-months.

Volunteers age 14 and under need to have helped at least 50 hours in
the past year to be eligible for an award, while older volunteers need
a minimum of 100 hours per year. The minimum for families or other
groups is 200 hours annually. Awardees will receive a personalized
certificate of achievement, a congratulatory letter from President
Barack Obama, a letter from the President’s Council on Service and
Civic Participation, and a President’s Award Pin.

Any volunteers who would like to receive an award must have proof of
their volunteer hours of service at a nonprofit organization, school
or college, civic association, government agency, church, or other
religious organization during the past 12 months. Documents that can
be used include timesheets from the organization where the volunteer
worked, or a signed letter on agency letterhead that states the total
number of volunteer hours of service over the past year. These items
should be brought to the Community Center of St Bernard, 1107 LeBeau
St, Arabi before October 30, 2009 in order to receive a President’s
Volunteer Service Award by December 2009.

"The volunteers who help at the Community Center of St Bernard and
many other agencies in St Bernard Parish and the greater New Orleans
area are role models in our community, generously donating their time,
energy and talent,” said Iray Nabatoff, Executive Director of the
Community Center. “The Award is our way of thanking these volunteers,
and inspiring others to make volunteering a central part of their
lives."

The Award is issued by the President's Council on Service and Civic
Participation, which encourages a culture of volunteer service and
civic participation among Americans. Chaired by two-time Super Bowl
Champion Darrell Green, with former U.S. Senators Bob Dole and John
Glenn as honorary co-chairs, the Council is composed of leaders in
government, media, entertainment, business, education, nonprofit and
volunteer service organizations and community volunteering. For more
