St. Bernard Parish announces DHH regulations for Septic Tanks

Department of Health and Hospitals rules must be followed

St. Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro Jr. wants residents to be
aware of the state Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) regulations and
procedures regarding septic tanks.

In general, these are the key points residents need to be aware of because
the parish will not issue any permits to individuals who have not completely
satisfied all DHH requirements:

1. A person shall not install, cause to be installed, alter subsequent
to installation, or operate an individual sewerage system of any kind
without first having obtained a permit from the state health officer (Title
51, Public Health-Sanitary Code).

2. A person who wishes to engage in the business of installing or
providing maintenance of individual sewerage systems shall obtain, in
accordance with the state's procedures, a license for such activity prior to
making any such installations or providing maintenance (Title 51, Public
Health-Sanitary Code).

3. Anyone utilizing an individual sewerage system must first obtain
approval from DHH before receiving a building permit from St. Bernard
Parish. (This includes permits for trailer placement.)

4. The parish strongly advises that anyone who needs to repair or
replace an existing individual sewerage system get approval from DHH before
doing any work, as many older septic systems have been deemed inadequate and
therefore shouldn't be repaired.

5. All new construction (including the placement of all trailers) will
require an updated system, which means a septic tank will not suffice and
that an individual water treatment plant must be installed.
