Louis Paul Wineski Jr., a longtime recreational coach in New Orleans and St.
Bernard Parish and former member of the St. Bernard Parish Police Jury, died
Saturday of cancer. He was 72.

Mr. Wineski, a native of New Orleans who moved to St. Bernard Parish in the
1960s, served on the parish's Police Jury from 1988 to 1992. He was a
longtime volunteer coach for the St. Bernard Parish and New Orleans
recreation departments.

Growing up in the 9th Ward, Mr. Wineski attended Holy Cross, where he
graduated in 1955. He later taught history and coached at the school and was
a founder and the first president of the Holy Cross Athletic Association,
his family said. During his high school years, Mr. Wineski made the
all-state and all-prep teams in baseball, a talent he took with him to
Loyola University, where he played third base for the Wolfpack baseball team
and graduated in 1961 with a degree in secondary education.

Mr. Wineski, who moved to Chalmette after Hurricane Betsy, was owner and
founder of Wineski Furniture, a St. Bernard Parish store that he ran until
its closing in 1995, his son, Raymond Wineski, said.

Raymond Wineski said his father passed on his love of baseball to several in
his family. Raymond Wineski played at Tulane University, another son, Louis
Wineski III, played at Nicholls State, and a grandson is currently playing
baseball at Harvard.

"Dad passed that on to us. It's in our blood,'' Raymond Wineski said.

Mr. Wineski ran unsuccessfully for the District C post on the St. Bernard
Police Jury in 1983. He ran for, and won, the same post in 1987. The Police
Jury was the forerunner to the current Parish Council.

Mr. Wineski and his wife of 53 years, Sally Ripoll Wineski, moved to
Covington after the levees broke during Hurricane Katrina, flooding the
family home in Chalmette.

In addition to Sally Wineski, survivors include a daughter, Peggy Wineski;
three sons, Louis III, Robert and Raymond Wineski; a brother, Gerald
Wineski; 12 grandchildren and one step-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. today at St. Bernard Memorial
Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette. A memorial Mass will be
celebrated by Father Bob Massett at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial
will be private. The family guestbook can be viewed and signed at
www.stbernardmemorial.com.
