Celebrate YOUR Parks During National Park Week, Junior Ranger Day

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve invites you to celebrate
YOUR national parks with free family fun at all of its six sites during
National Park Week (April 17-25) and Junior Ranger Day (Saturday, April 24).
Special activities will give kids the chance to earn Junior Ranger badges
and patches. For more information, call the site offering the program or
visit the park website at www.nps.gov/jela. Admission to all sites and all
programs listed are free.

The National Park Service Junior Ranger Program seeks to connect kids with
their national parks. Junior Ranger programs are available at many National
Park Service sites and are open to all children. Games, puzzles, projects,
and other activities share the natural, historical, and cultural treasures
of park sites.

Special activities are:

* Acadian Cultural Center (501 Fisher Road, Lafayette, 337-232-0789)
presents national park videos and a trivia contest (get eight out of 10
answers correct and win a prize!) throughout the week. On Junior Ranger Day,
explore the center with a scavenger hunt.

* Barataria Preserve (6588 Barataria Blvd., Marrero, 504-689-3690
ext. 10) celebrates Junior Ranger Day with a special program on the Bayou
Coquille Trail at 10:00 a.m.

* Chalmette Battlefield (8606 West St. Bernard Hwy., Chalmette,
504-281-0510) rangers kick off the week at St. Bernard Parish's Art in April
Festival on Saturday, April 17. Enjoy a free day of art, crafts, food,
music, and fun and join the rangers 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. for a Battle of New
Orleans scavenger hunt (at Torres Park, 8246 West Judge Perez Drive,
Chalmette). On Junior Ranger Day, visit the battlefield for scavenger hunts
and "Chalmette bingo."

* French Quarter Visitor Center (419 Decatur St., New Orleans,
504-589-2636 ext. 1) features scavenger hunts and hands-on fun (make a
pirate hat or a paper pirogue) on Junior Ranger Day.

* Prairie Acadian Cultural Center (250 West Park Avenue, Eunice,
337-457-8499) offers a national parks slide show throughout the week and a
scavenger hunt on Junior Ranger Day.

* Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center (314 St. Mary St., Thibodaux,
985-448-1375) gets back to nature with hands-on wetlands fun and museum
tours 10:00 a.m.-noon on Junior Ranger Day.
