Call To Action

Rep. Neil Abramson has filed house bills 531 and 825 which address the
serious problem of human trafficking. HB 531 is a technical bill as it
changes the mindset of the offender who is recruiting, harboring,
transporting, providing, soliciting, or obtaining another person through
fraud, force, or coercion in order to provide services or labor from doing
so "intentionally" to "knowingly." This emphasizes the seriousness of the
crime and allows law enforcement to bring to justice those engaged in such
criminal behavior.

HB 825 adds the crimes of human trafficking and trafficking of children for
sexual purposes to the list of sex offenses and crimes of violence. By
doing so, it acknowledges the particularly egregious nature of such crimes
and attempts to provide consistent penalties so as to deter one from
committing them.

This is a measure which advocates for the human dignity of all, including
some of the most vulnerable among us. Therefore, the bishops of Louisiana
strongly encourage you to urge your Senators on Senate Judiciary C committee
to support this legislation.
