Call To Action

Rep. Frank Hoffman has filed HB 1247 which would enable Louisiana to opt out
of funding elective abortions. Hoffman's bill achieves this end by
prohibiting coverage of elective abortions by any health insurance issuer
which provides plans or policies issued within Louisiana. An elective
abortion is defined in this legislation as an abortion, "for any reason
other than to preserve the life of the mother when her life is endangered by
a physical disorder, physical illness, or physical injury, including a
life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy
itself."

The Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops (LCCB), in conjunction with the
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), continuously urged
Congress to reject any federal health care reform that violated the Hyde
amendment. Unfortunately, such voices were silenced in the passage of the
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.

Please join in support of this legislation to ensure that Louisiana does not
fund elective abortions by contacting members of the Senate Health & Welfare
committee!
