Call To Action

Rep. Pat Smith has filed HB 529, which requires instruction with respect to
sex education in public schools. Such education would include "the
importance of effectively using contraceptives and barrier methods to
prevent unintended pregnancy and to protect against sexually transmitted
infections."

While many Catholic students attend Catholic schools within Louisiana, the
majority of students who are Catholic attend public schools. Therefore, we
must ensure that these students' voices are represented at the Capitol.

The church believes that sexuality is a life-long process and as such has
long supported education in sexuality. It is part of our curricula in
Catholic schools beginning within grade three and continuing throughout high
school.

However, the Catholic notion of sexuality education is that it be timely,
prudent, and moral. Moral is to mean not simply teaching sexual information
but additionally, the presentation of moral values so that there is a clear
distinction between what is right and what is wrong. Teaching sexuality
without the presentation of morals fails to recognize and respect the
dignity of our youth as responsible persons. The absence of moral values
can also lead to sexual and moral relativism.

Teaching sexuality within the context of a public school, where religious
doctrine is specifically prohibited from being taught, is MOST difficult.
