Legislative Session Update
Understandably, interest in this year's Regular Legislative Session
has taken a backseat to the tragedy in the Gulf. As lawmakers discuss
legislation and hammer out a new budget, the oil spill is not far from
anyone's mind.

Lawmakers will begin to take up the budget for the next fiscal year today.
While the oil spill will not impact the state's budget for the remainder of
this fiscal year, it is too early to tell what the financial picture will
look like down the road.

So far this session, some common-sense legislation has passed out of
committee including the following:

- HB 1226 provides for the abolition of certain boards and commissions
- SB 71 requires state and local contractors to disclose the full splitting
or sharing of contract commissions and fees
- SB 293 requires state agencies to annually review employee vacancies and
attrition rates and make strategic reductions by 5%
- SB 599 provides that no more than 7% of certain federal revenues generated
from Outer Continental Shelf energy activity may be used for administrative
fees

There is also pending legislation that merits consideration including
several bills resulting from the extensive work of the Louisiana
Streamlining Government Commission.

With a little more than a month left to go in the legislative session, we
still have time to pass legislation that will produce meaningful results for
our state.
