What a narrow minded presentation. Oh sure, you can point out similarites
between then and now, but let me point out something they conveniently left
out. Do you realize when compared to the aviation industry, oil production
has had a better safety record? Consider all the oil that has been explored
from the earth for over a century compared to the few mishaps that have
taken place - divide the number of barrells that have spilled/leaked by the
number safely explored that has supplied the entire world its energy needs?
There's not a calculator in the world that can provide enough zeros after
the decimal point. Even the aviation industry doesn't have that kind of
record, but we don't hear anything about them wanting to stop all air
travel. Huh, and let's not even embarrass the automobile industry by
showing their statistics - but ironic is the connection between oil
production and our need to drive cars.
The fact is the number of people injured or killed in the production of oil
doesn't even register when compared to injuries and fatalites from driving
cars. Furthermore, the amount of pollution from the few mishaps and oil
spills are barely a blip on the radar compared to the pollution created by
cars and other fuel propelled machines. So after you think about it, you
realize there are more deaths and more pollution caused by the "end product"
of the oil industry than from its exploration and production.
Of course we need to develop a better plan for the protocol of responding to
such oil industry mishaps. But when you think about, after many decades,
the aviation industry has made no better progress at building safer planes
or better crash survival numbers either. I'm not saying the oil industry
(and the U.S. government that is supposed to be properly monitoring it)
should not be criticized, but I am saying that we often need to first take a
step back and see the bigger picture before jumping to a "chicken little"
solution by making absurd laws and policies just because we think the sky is
falling.
