Passers-by helped rescue an elderly woman from a burning Chalmette home
Tuesday morning, St. Bernard Parish authorities said.

Two St. Bernard Parish sheriff's deputies and a parish Public Works
Department employee saw the house on fire at 2100 Rosetta St., and stopped
to assist. Several people had already fled the house and were on the lawn,
authorities said.

One of the deputies, David Culpepper, called 911 while the other, Jonathan
Smith, entered the house along with Assistant Public Works Director Louis
Pomes. Pomes and Smith found a 79-year-old woman and carried the woman and
her motorized chair outside the home, Sheriff's Office spokesman Steve
Cannizaro said.

Cannizaro said Culpepper and Smith work for the sheriff's Corrections
Division. He said Pomes was working on a nearby street.

Deputy Fire Chief Glenn Ellis said the fire department dispatched units at
8:03 a.m. and that they were on the scene at 8:05 a.m. He said several
people lived in the home, but that all were outside of the residence when
firefighters arrived. No injuries from the fire were reported, he said.

The two-alarm blaze was brought under control in around 20 minutes, Ellis
said. The residence was badly damaged, he said.

The cause is under investigation, but Ellis said the fire appears to have
started in the garage.
