St. Bernard Parish will use recently acquired brush skimming systems to
recover oil outside of the Chandeleur Islands

St. Bernard Parish oil spill operations, as expected, has received the
additional six brush skimmers that were expected, a skimmer that collects
oil but not water and can be used in rough seas. The parish now has a total
of 8 brush skimmers for the fleet. Training continues daily and is ongoing
with the commercial fleet on these skimming activities.

These skimming systems will be utilized early tomorrow morning to skim a
small patch of oil that was confirmed today about 6 miles off of the
northeast tip of the Chandeleur Islands. At first light US Coast Guard
Pollution Investigators and St. Bernard Parish commercial fleet vessels
along with Oil Spill Response Organization crews will start to skim this
small patch, approximately 10 yards by 10 yards, of oil.

St. Bernard Parish oil spill response personnel are constantly monitoring
the tropical wave that is developing over the Western Carribean. The concern
is if this weather system is going to push oil into the Chandeleur/Breton
Sound area, and whether or not the parish has the assets to combat this if
necessary. This system will continue to be monitored and actions taken as
needed to prepare for any possible impact of oil in parish waters and
marshes.
