The St. Bernard Parish Animal Service will be offering free spay/neuter
surgery and micro-chipping for all Pit Bulls and dogs over 50 pounds through
December 30, 2010. A generous donation from the Louisiana SPCA (LA/SPCA) and
the American SPCA (ASPCA) has ensured more pet owners can address the needs
of their dogs despite the depressed economy in St. Bernard Parish.

"The recent oil crisis in our area has emphasized this region's need for a
proactive spay/neuter program," said Beth Brewster, Director of St. Bernard
Parish Animal Services. "Many people could not care for the offspring of
their pets due to the uncertainty of their employment status."

President Taffaro said he wanted to thank the Louisiana SPCA LA/SPCA) for
their substantial support in the critical time.

"Once again, this important organization is helping us meet the needs of our
residents and animals through this donation that will touch so many,"
Taffaro said. "The donation will help balance the safety of our community
while also offering assistance to residents to provide appropriate care and
take responsibility for their pets."

Councilman Kenny Henderson agreed, and he said the program is an important
one.

"We want to try to control the population of dogs and cats in St. Bernard
Parish to try to minimize the euthanization of animals."

The Gulf Coast Companion Animal Relief Program assisted many families
immediately after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill impacted St. Bernard
Parish by providing pet food, annual exams, and spay/neuter surgeries. As
the area rebounds from this most recent crisis the St. Bernard Parish Animal
Service, ASPCA, and the LA/SPCA are using the remaining resources of this
program to provide preventative services to residents. The spay/neuter and
micro-chipping services will ensure that families are prepared to take care
of their pets responsibly no matter what crisis occurs.

To participate in the free services please call 504-278-1534 to schedule
your appointment. Feral cats will also be eligible for free spay/neuter
surgeries courtesy of Friends of St. Bernard Animal Shelter. All
appointments will be filled on a first come, first serve basis until
December 30 or funds are depleted.
