St. Bernard Parish Deputies: Accident Result Of Mechanical Problem

POSTED: 12:52 pm CDT March 20, 2011

UPDATED: 1:04 pm CDT March 20, 2011

ST. BERNARD PARISH, La. -- The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office said two
brothers were in a boating accident that left one dead and the younger one
still missing Saturday.

Deputies said that Alvin Anderson, 63, was killed in the accident, while his
younger brother, Mark Anderson, 53, is still missing.

Officers said that Alvin Anderson was taken to Tulane Medical Center in New
Orleans where he was pronounced dead. The U.S. Coast Guard said the search
for Mark Anderson was stopped Saturday night and resumed on Sunday.

The Coast Guard said the accident happened in Lake Borgne near the
Mississippi River and the ruins of the historic Martello Castle while the
Anderson brothers were fishing at 3:30 p.m.

The Sheriff's Office said the accident was the result of a mechanical
problem on their boat, rather than a crash. Both victims were thrown off the
boat, deputies said.

Two fishermen in another boat, one related to the victims, saw Alvin
Anderson in the water and stopped to help, authorities said.

Alvin Anderson's relative told deputies the victim had suffered injuries
when he was thrown from the boat, possibly from the propeller, and was
initially unresponsive to CPR.

Neither man was wearing a flotation device, authorities said.

The state Wildlife and Fisheries Department, the St. Bernard Parish
Sheriff's Office Marine Division and the Coast Guard said they are working
together in the investigation.
