Local Author to Discuss New Book on Islenos at Nunez History
Lecture Series

Samantha Perez will host a discussion of her first book, "The Islenos of
Louisiana: On the Water's Edge" during the next session of the Nunez
Community College History Lecture Series.

The program starts at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 2nd with a
wine and reception followed by the lecture at 7 p.m. in the college
auditorium.

Perez, who is a resident of Violet, says the book is based on
"a blend of academic research and interviews with living Islenos" and traces
their history, culture and accomplishments from their arrival to Louisiana
in the late 1700s through Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Deepwater
Horizon Oil Spill in 2010.

"Generations of Islenos have overcome the challenges of an
evolving American society as well as the devastation of storms that ripped
through their land," Perez said. "Through it all, the Islenos have
preserved their unique heritage, traditions, and culture for more than two
centuries."

She says the book is their history and will sign copies of
the book after the lecture.

Perez is currently a graduate student at Tulane University.
