If you've been to Plantation Restaurant or Par 3 Diner, you've probably been
helped by Carol and Scott.

Carol is five months pregnant and during an ultrasound they found out their
little girl has Spina Bifida.
Spina bifida is a birth defect that involves the incomplete development of
the spinal cord or its coverings. The term spina bifida comes from Latin and
literally means "split" or "open" spine.
Spina bifida occurs at the end of the first month of pregnancy when the two
sides of the embryo's spine fail to join together, leaving an open area. In
some cases, the spinal cord or other membranes may push through this opening
in the back. The condition is usually detected before a baby is born and
treated right after birth.
Carol went through a series of test in Houston, Texas and discovered that
she is a candidate for a new in-utero surgery that has just recently become
an option. She is the first case that Texas Children's Hospital has come
across that is a good candidate. The team of doctors in Houston has referred
her to Vanderbilt University in Nashville Tennessee where they will
accompany her to meet the team of doctors that will perform the surgery. The
surgery needs to be done within the next two weeks.
The surgery will consist of the surgeon making a small incision on the
uterus and operating on the baby. She has to stay at the hospital for 5-7
days and then to a local hotel close to hospital for final ultrasound before
she can go home. She will go on bed rest for 6 weeks, and then she has light
duty with no work for the remainder of the pregnancy.
Please join us for a fund raising event to help out with medical cost and
travel.
