Knights of Nemesis 6th Annual "Hook a Kid on Fishing Rodeo" held at Shell
Beach

Kids' Division sponsored by the Meraux Foundation gave away about 250
fishing poles

With the completion of the successful 6th annual Knights of Nemesis Hook a
Kid Fishing Rodeo, the group gave out about 250 fishing poles to children at
the Shell Beach event that was under beautiful, sunny skies. That means that
since the first rodeo was held, Nemesis, with the help of the Meraux
Foundation, has given out nearly 1,500 poles to children.

"The purpose of the event is to introduce kids to fishing," said Donald
Picou, one of the event committee's co-chairs. "If we can keep the kids busy
and off the streets, then everybody wins."

The event also includes an adult division. Entrants can fish on Friday and
Saturday for the Saturday afternoon weigh-in. More than 400 people attended
a family-friendly street party with food and music at Shell Beach for the
weigh-in. Participants and family members enjoyed fried catfish and fried
speckled trout, shrimp pasta, as well as hamburgers, hot dogs, hot sausage,
pulled pork, French fries and potato salad. The day ended with awards given
in several adult and children categories and a parade of prizes with more
than 50 prizes.

The Meraux Foundation has annually paid for the Kids' Division that funds
the trophies fishing medals, awards, poles and other aspects of the rodeo.
Local artist Perry Balli donated the metal art for the adult fishing
division plaques. Jesse Shaffer and his crew of volunteers caught shrimp and
catfish and cooked the fish the day of the event in addition to other
volunteers who cooked the rest of the food. In addition to a visit from
Ronald McDonald, Danica Williams, a biologist with the state Department of
Wildlife and Fisheries, organized a children's craft booth with fishing
crafts as well as fishing hands-on learning exhibits and information.

A committee of more than 20 Nemesis members organized and ran the event. For
more information, contact Donald Picou at (504) 279-3229, Danny Fernandez at
