St. Bernard Parish Animal Services Receives $38,140 Grant from PetSmart
Charities to Sterilize 1,000 Free Roaming Cats

The St. Bernard Parish Animal Services received a $38,140 grant from
PetSmart Charities to increase the number of spay/neuter surgeries by 40
percent. The organization's 3-year-old pet sterilization program
successfully alters more than 600 cats a year on average to proactively
fight the areas homeless-pet overpopulation.

Through funding possible by this grant, Barbara Meyer has been appointed as
Community Cat Coordinator. The coordinator's main duties with be carrying
out field work in the Chalmette community; locating and trapping
free-roaming cats for spay/neuter. The Coordinator will also coordinate
appointments and working with the public and community cat caregivers.

The program offers free spay/neuter services for cats in the Chalmette area
through the Animal Services feral transport program. The Animal Services
goal is to reduce homeless-cat overpopulation in the area by 80% in seven
years.

"The feral cats in this community have helped keep the rodent population
under control after the two major disasters this area has suffered," says
Beth Brewster, Director of St. Bernard Parish Animal Services. "This grant
has given us a way to pay them back for their help." Appointments can be
made by calling the animal shelter at 504/278-1534. To view information
