CHALMETTE, La. - St. Bernard Parish deputies have arrested a man after he
allegedly shot at detectives who were inquiring about his 12-year-old son,
who hadn't been attending school this year.

The incident happened around 10:20 a.m.

John Kain, 52, was booked with improper supervision of the boy, attempted
murder of the officers, and illegal carrying of a gun.

Sheriff-elect James Pohlmann said detectives were called to the scene
because Kain's 12-year-old son hadn't been to school since January, and
because they lived in a makeshift shed without electricity.

Further, Kain wouldn't let state child protective services in to check on
the boy, Pohlmann said. Kain would tell them he had a gun and would use it
if necessary. He would only go outside with the boy in front of him, "almost
as a shield," Pohlmann said.

On Thursday, detectives followed Kain and his son into New Orleans, but took
no action until they returned to their home in eastern St. Bernard.

At that point, the detectives set off a non-lethal flash to startle them.
Pohlmann said the plan worked, as the boy went to the ground was safely
taken by detectives. Kain tried to flee and fired at the detectives, who
returned fire, but no one was injured.

Kain later surrendered.

"We are glad it ended without anyone getting hurt,'' Pohlmann said.

There is no legal custody established for the son, even though the boy
stayed with Kain. Pohlmann said the boy will now live with his mother or
another relative after a stay at Children's Hospital.
