The St. Bernard Parish Tourist Commission and the Office of Tourism are
celebrating National Tourism Awareness Week, May 21 through 25, at the
Aycock Barn, the home of the St. Bernard Parish Visitor Information Center,
409 Aycock Street in Old Arabi.
The week-long event kicked off May 17 with the St. Bernard Seafood and
Farmers' Market's Art & Wine Walk held at the Aycock Barn. Restaurants
selected by locals as St. Bernard's "Top 20 Local Favorites" were announced
at the event. The public is invited to stop by the Visitor Information
Center this week to sample some of the local cuisine from a few of the Top
20 Restaurants, and pick up information on how to be a tourist in your own
backyard.
The Tourist Commission is in the process of developing a tourism strategic
plan with support of a local Tourism Task Force and the University of New
Orleans, Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism program that will provide a
road map for the development of the Tourism Industry during the next five
years.
According to the Economic Impact of Domestic Travel on Louisiana Parishes in
2010, St. Bernard Parish received $470,000 in local sales tax revenue from
travel related expenditures.
