ST. BERNARD PARISH, La. - State Police are investigating the death of a
pedestrian who was hit by a car early Monday, according to State Police
spokesperson Trooper Melissa Matey.

Around 6:30 a.m., Joseph Gioe, 81, of Chalmette, was walking in the right
lane of LA 47, near D'Amour Street, when a car driven by Deborah Riedel, 41,
of Violet, hit Gioe, according to Matey.

Gioe was taken to the hospital where he later died. It is unknown why Gioe
was in the roadway, according to Matey.

The crash remains under investigation, according to Matey, though speed and
impairment are not suspected as factors. Toxicology results are pending.
